What is a biodigester?

A biodigester is a treatment vessel that uses living microbes to break down organic waste in wastewater. ClearBlu specializes in aerobic biodigesters — systems that supply oxygen to those microbes so they digest organics, fats, oils, greases (FOG), and hydrocarbons far faster than they would in a passive tank. The key to their efficiency is fixed-film media: a surface inside the vessel where microbes attach and colonize. With a stable home to live on, the microbial population grows exponentially and processes incoming load far more effectively than suspended-growth alone.

Historically, aerobic biodigester technology was limited by the type of aeration available — coarse bubbles transfer oxygen inefficiently and waste energy. New developments in bubble size have changed that, dramatically improving oxygen transfer and expanding the use of biodigesters for high-strength waste streams.

Due to their consolidated footprint, aerobic biodigesters are becoming an excellent alternative to DAF and SAF systems. They use less horsepower and eliminate the need for costly chemicals.
